Five, altogether. Four word are repeated. Then repeated a third time with the word dear added. The melody used was from another pre-exiting song.

The firs version of the song was Good morning to you, to start the day for the class at school. Then one day it was somebody's birthday, so the words were changed. As they say, the rest was history
